Base64 Encoder / Decoder
Convert text to Base64, or decode Base64 back to readable text — with proper support for emoji, accents and non-English characters. Runs fully in your browser.
What is Base64 used for?
Base64 turns binary data or text into a safe string of letters, numbers, + and / characters. Developers use it to embed images inside HTML and CSS (data URIs), to send data through APIs, and inside email and authentication headers.
One important warning: Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it in seconds — never use it to hide passwords or secrets. For real password safety, websites should use hashing, which our guide on how to hash passwords in PHP explains step by step.
This tool handles Unicode correctly, so text like Hindi, emojis and accented characters encode and decode without turning into garbage — a step many simple decoders get wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Base64 secure for passwords?
No. Base64 can be decoded by anyone instantly. It is only a transport format. Passwords must be stored with a one-way hash such as bcrypt via password_hash() in PHP.
Why does Base64 end with = signs?
The equals signs are padding. Base64 works in blocks, and the padding makes the final block the right length. One or two = characters at the end are completely normal.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No — encoding and decoding happen in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
