Number to Words Converter
Type any number and see it written in words — in both the Indian system (thousand, lakh, crore) and the international system (million, billion). Perfect for cheques, invoices, agreements and forms where amounts must be written out.
How to use this number to words converter
Type the number — commas are fine — and the words appear as you type. You always get both systems: Indian (thousand, lakh, crore, arab…) for Indian documents, and international (million, billion, trillion) for global use. The third line formats it as "Rupees … Only", ready for a cheque or invoice.
The two systems group digits differently. International groups by three (1,000,000 = one million), while Indian groups the first three and then by two (10,00,000 = ten lakh). That is why the same number reads differently — and why writing the wrong one on a legal document causes confusion.
Numbers up to 15 digits are supported. For dates and ages instead, try the age calculator, and see all our free tools for more everyday utilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many zeros are in a lakh and a crore?
One lakh = 100,000 (5 zeros). One crore = 10,000,000 (7 zeros) — that is 100 lakh. In the international system, one crore is ten million, and one lakh is a tenth of a million (hundred thousand).
How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?
Write the amount exactly as the converter's rupees line shows — "Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Only" — and draw a line through any empty space after it so nothing can be added.
Does it work with decimals or negative numbers?
This tool converts whole numbers, which is what cheques and forms need. Round decimals to the nearest whole number first.
Is the number I type stored anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
